Many of the techniques and ideas in this book can be used by themselves, simply as ways to make a conventional garden more productive or earth-friendly. This was a very good introduction to the field of permaculture. It helps you design a forest garden, gives you the bases to work with large scale gardens and small scale gardens -though the actual small scale gardens could use more information, I’m sure there’s other books on small spaces.

I found the explanations of natural processes very enlightening, and the species charts very useful.

Building on these two chapters, chapter 10 describes how to assemble plants and guilds into a multi-storied food forest or forest garden. I am a scientist, and I can’t believe none of this had ever occurred to me! It breaks down the concepts of permaculture in a way that makes it easy for the beginner to understand and apply.
